WHAT IS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY?

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a nonprofit, nondenominational, Christian housing organization formed in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

SOME HFHI FACTS:

  • Habitat is at work in 100 countries
  • A Habitat house is built every 22 minutes
  • Habitat houses sheltering more than
    one million people

PARTNER FAMILIES

Partner families are selected based on need, ability to pay a mortgage and willingness to partner with us. “Sweat equity” is Habitat’s name for the labor the partner family expend in building their own houses and the houses of other partner families, as well as the time they spend investing in their own self-improvement. Partner families attend a series of classes to educate them on handling finances, becoming a home owner and home maintenance. Partner families BUY their houses with a down payment and a no-interest mortgage.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Each home Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities builds currently costs approximately $70,000. This is generously subsidized by donated and/or discounted building supplies and materials, skilled and volunteer labor, financial and in-kind donations. Partner family mortgage payments accrue in the Revolving Fund for Humanity, which recycles the payments, along with other donations and funds, to build more houses.

GET INVOLVED

Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities invites you to become involved in building homes for people in need by swinging a hammer, serving on one of our many committees, or becoming a donor or financial sponsor. Orientation for new volunteers is held monthly. Volunteers are also needed at the Habitat ReStore, a retail business that accepts donations of new and “gently used” building materials and sells those materials to the general public at significant discounts. The ReStore is located at 3629 Mississippi Avenue in Davenport. Visit their website at www.restoreqc.org, or call 563-391-9066..
